Your Teeth

Indirectly anyway. Kissing causes us salivate, which in turn helps to release and clean food particles from between our teeth. It also helps to reduce the acidity level in our mouths which is the primary cause of tooth decay.

So since you’ll be doing all that kissing to help your teeth you might as well have sex too to get some good exercise.

Avoiding Incontinence

Your pubococcygeus muscles (often referred to as the Kegel muscles) are the the muscles in your pelvic floor. If these muscles become weekened it can lead to urinary or bowel incontinence. During an orgasm these muscles are exercised which helps keep them strong. The stronger you keep these muscles the less likely you are to have problems with incontinence later in life.

Prostate Health

A major study by the National Cancer Institute showed that increased sexual activity of older men lowers their risk of prostate cancer. A more recent study by Nottingham University has backed up these findings.

Some studies suggest that the risk reduction is because of the release of toxins from the prostate gland. Others make the claim that the reduction is because the same people that are more sexually active are also the people who maintain a healthier lifestyle.

Either way having more sex can’t hurt.

Increasing the Right Kind of Stress

Sex is stressful. As shown in a previous post, sex can be good for Relieving Stress, but is has been shown that sex causes stress. Most kinds of stress can be bad for us and can lead to many problems with our health. Luckily for us the stress produced by having sex has the opposite reaction of most other stresses. A recent study by Gould and colleagues shows this result, and can be found at PLoS ONE.

Helping to Lose Weight

It has been said before that the exercise we get from having sex burns calories which helps us with Maintaining a Healthy Body Weight. Well sex can help us with this in another way. We often eat when we are board, and all these little snacks add up, but what if we were to have sex when we are board instead. Not only would you be not eating to extra calories, but you would also be burning extra calories. Not to mention all the other great benefits from having sex.

So instead of heading to the cabinet for the bag of chips when your feeling the munchies coming on, you should head to the bedroom for a good romp in the sack.

Boosting Your Mood

While we have sex our bodies release a flood of chemicals including Endorphins, which are the “feel good” chemicals. Another is oxytocin, which is shown to make people feel more generous towards their partners. Also released is the body’s key antidepressant chemical, Serotonin.

Women are more likely to suffer from depression than men. The main reason for this is low levels of estrogen. The good news is that american psychologist Gordon Gallup studied almost 300 women and found that sexually active women who were in monogamous relationships were far less likely to suffer from depression. Gallup’s speculation is that chemicals in semen may have a mood boosting effects when absorbed through the vaginal walls into the bloodstream. Another reason may be that estrogen levels rise during intercourse.

So go out there and get yourself in a good mood.

Relieving Stress

While having sex our bodies release endorphins which are known to elevate spirits and decrease stress. Several studies show that those who have frequent sex with a partner have lower levels of stress. Some have shown that frequent intercourse was associated with lower diastolic blood pressure in cohabiting participants. Psychologist Gordon Gallup reported that sexually active women whose male partners did not use condoms were less likely to suffer from depression. One theory for this is that a hormone found only in semen (prostoglandin) may help regulate female hormones. Another study that measured womens heart rates and cortisol levels showed a decreased level of stress after good sex with a partner. The release of stress and the feeling of calm that come after having an orgasm also helps greatly with sleep.

So if you are all stressed and can’t sleep, wake up your partner and convince them to have sex.

Boosting Your Immunity

A study at Wilkes University in Pennsylvania showed that people having sex once or twice a week had a 30% higher level of immunoglobulin A, an antibody which is known to boost our immune system, than those who reported being abstinent or have sex less than once a week. This means that you will be better protected against the common cold and other viral diseases. So for less trips to the store for cold & flu medications just have sex more often.

Now just because you are having sex more often and have more antibodies in your system you are not anymore protected from STD’s, so remember to use condoms.
